Notes & Tones first bottling was the 2020 vintage, and it was released in 2023. It represented a multi-year journey that Muggs and Egon embarked on with Northern California’s Broc Cellars and its winemaker Chris Brockway. The bottles were released alongside a limited run of Notes & Tones album, produced by Muggs and built around samples from the jazz legend Sun Ra's catalog.
Broc Cellars is a natural winery in Berkeley known for their wines crafted with creativity and intention. Chris Brockway, winemaker and owner, established Broc Cellars in 2004 to showcase California’s range for delivering fresh, affordable wines. All wines use only native fermentations and are made with the intention to lift you up, never weigh you down. Broc works with all organically farmed and family-owned vineyards across California and has recently completed the purchase of the Fox Hill Vineyard in Ukiah, an organically certified site, and is where the grapes from Notes & Tones are grown and tended.
Notes & Tones is a natural wine done in homage to the book of the same name by the great jazz drummer Art Taylor, and also to Egon and Muggs favorite skin-contact white wines, those of France's Xavier Caillard and Italy's late Stanko Radikon. Each vintage is a different blend of old vine Italian varietals such as Tocai Friulano and Trebbiano, and Muggs and Egon work carefully with Chris Brockway to blend a wine that they all feel speak to its influences.
